The ICFP 2008 Programming Competition this year was a great success! It's a worldwide programming competition to see who can solve a difficult problem (this year, it was a Mars Rover simulation) in a weekend with an unlimited amount of people, from anywhere in the world. The competition itself used to focus solely on functional programming languages (Haskell, LISP, etc.) but has since expanded to include Java and C++. Here's a link to the post-mortem, including an in-depth writeup of the NAU ACM's submitted solution. Also, here are the solutions that teams have posted for review.

Great job this year! The winners will be announced in September at the International Conference on Functional Programming!

What is NAU ACM?

NAU ACM is Northern Arizona University's Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. Essentially, we're the computer club on campus. We hold regularly scheduled meetings which include demonstrations of student research, fun tech-related movies, scholarship and job opportunities, games, and overall stimulating conversation.

Why should I join ACM?

NAU ACM is primarily a group of intelligent, driven Computer Science students - many of whom are upper class-men. We have been through what you are going through in your first few years and we can give you help and tips on how to succeed while you are trying to find your footing.

We can also help you build bridges for the future - we regularly discuss job & scholarship opportunities in and around Flagstaff and it's good to build your social network up with people who can possibly help you to get a good job once you graduate.

Throughout the year, we're always working on cool, interesting projects. We hold regular "Digital Carnivals" or LAN Parties (for which we built custom scoring software); we are in the process of building and writing games for our game cabinet, which will hold (and make playable) student final projects from CS 413: Virtual Worlds. These are just a few of the cool things we're working on in ACM - there's plenty more to come!

Not to mention, we're just an overall intelligent, laid-back and fun group of people who would definitely enjoy your company at our weekly meetings.

How do I join ACM?

First, you should start by visiting our weekly meetings. These times should be posted on our Calendar or you can just look for our flyers around the Engineering Building! We would love to meet you and talk to you about subjects that most interest you.

Second, if you like what you see and hear at the weekly meetings, you can join the national ACM organization with a Student Membership. This gives you access to the ACM Digital Library with a large collection of computing-related research papers, free online classes, scholarship opportunities and professional networking connections. AND you'll receive a nifty "ACM Member" card in the mail!

Defcon 16 PDF Print E-mail

This has become something of a yearly tradition here at NAU ACM. DEFCON is a yearly hacking conference with in-depth computer security talks (often revealing 0-day vulnerabilities, which sometimes results in spectacles of a speaker being hauled offstage by FBI midway through the talk). People attending DEFCON are normally rebellious college-aged computer security enthusiasts. (The REAL security professionals attend BLACKHAT the week before, which is Waaaaaay out of our price range)

Cool stuff from last year's DEFCON:

Q&A Session with Bruce Schneier (God):

Johnny Long's No-Tech Hacking (Funny!):

Making of the Defcon Badge:

Undercover Reporter Story:

There will be hacking, geeky joking, electronic partying and much consumption of alcohol.

The 411:
